Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a 2016 New Zealand adventure comedy-drama film written and directed by Taika Waititi who co-produced with Carthew Neal, Leanne Saunders and Matt Noonan, based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. The film stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison as a father figure and son who become caught in a manhunt.

Ricky Baker (Dennison), a defiant young city kid who is preoccupied with the gangster lifestyle, is sent by child welfare services to live in the country with foster mother Aunt Bella and her husband, the cantankerous Uncle Hec (Neill). When Bella suddenly passes away and child services decide to take Ricky back to a care home, Ricky runs away into the bush with Uncle Hec in pursuit. Child services arrive to find the house empty and the ba but down, and come to a warped conclusion that the bereaved and mentally unstable Hec has abducted Ricky. A national manhunt involving the police and military ensues, and the two get over their differences and work together to escape from false arrest and Ricky’s belief that he will be permanently sent to juvy. After four months of surviving in the wildeess, the authorities finally coer the two; Hec gets remanded and Ricky is taken in by a kind family. After Hec’s release from jail, Ricky, with his new foster family’s permission, goes into the bush with Hec to photograph the Huia, an extinct bird which they had re-discovered on their time on the run.
