The film joueys into the artificial highs and the real lows that they face while treading the paths fraught with mortal dangers. But above all, Udta Punjab is about the famed Punjabi spirit, that despite being fully down, has the audacity of looking you in the eye and saying – Drugs di maa di!

Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is a Punjabi pop star and a drug addict. He has gained popularity among the youth, by creating songs about drugs and intoxication. His life takes a bad tu when addiction starts effecting his health and his career. During a rave party, he is been arrested by Punjab Police for possession of drugs. During his short trip to jail, Tommy meets two drug addict teenagers and realized that he has been unknowingly promoting drugs among the youth, through his music and behavior in public. On getting bail Tommy decides to quite addiction and pass on the same massage to his fans, during his next concert. To his disappointment the crowd starts hooting, which angers Tommy and he ends up pissing on the public, before running away.

Meanwhile, in other part of Punjab a Bihari migrant girl (Alia Bhatt) finds a pack of drugs while working in a farm as labor. While trying to sell it to some drug addict boys, she comes under the radar of a local drug mafia who were the real owners of the packet. Scared of getting caught she throws away the drug in water, not knowing how expensive it is. The gang abducts her, forces her to be a sex slave by intoxicating her. One fine day she manages to escape and reaches the site of Tommy Singh’s concert. She hides in a ruined house nearby only to meet Tommy also hiding from angry mob. She saves Tommy from group of guys thrashing him and they both shares their part of story. The mafia gang soon finds them and takes away the girl, leaving unconscious Tommy behind. On waking up in the moing, Tommy realized that police has issued an arrest warrant against his pissing act, but still decides to rescue the girl by tracing her from the farms were she told him she worked.
